En 1990 Diego Montero era un joven arquitecto porteño para quien Punta del Este había sido siempre un lugar de vacaciones y donde había empezado a hacer algunas obras dispersas desde el año 80. Casi todas pequeñísimas rusticas y elementales, pero con un sentido del lugar y del savoir vivre muy personal y característico que poco a poco fue ganando cultores y adeptos. Hoy, cuando ya hace más de 20 años desde que se instaló definitivamente con su familia en Manantiales, es prácticamente imposible hacer más de dos cuadras por esa angosta franja sobre el mar que va desde el puente de La Barra hasta Jose Ignacio sin cruzarse con alguna casa u obra suya. Y si bien es cierto que el mero aspecto cuantitativo es impresionante – desde el año 90 ha construido un promedio de entre diez y quince casas por año – tal vez sea más interesante aún el hecho de que muchas de sus obras (como el restorán Los Negros, en José Ignacio, o más reciententemente el hotel de Garzón, ambos de Francis Mallmann) hayan sido la piedra fundacional y el motor de arranque para desarrollos posteriores.
In 1990 Diego Montero was a young architect from Buenos Aires, for whom Punta del Este had always mostly a holiday destination. A place where he had built a handful of houses, with a very unique sense of place, that were slowly gathering a cult following. Now, more than 20 years after he decided to make that area his permanent residence, it's virtually impossible to walk for more than a couple of blocks, along that narrow strip between La Barra and Jose Ignacio, without bumping into one of his houses. Aside from the impressive volume of his output – he has bult an average of 10 houses a year over the last decade – it is perhaps more interesting that many of his projects (such as Los Negros restaurant, or more recently the Hotel Garzón, both for Francis Mallmann) have become stepping stones for developments to follow.
